The United Way of the Alberta Capital Region continues to utilize the GM Community Wheels vans to their fullest potential.
One of the United Way agencies using a GM Community Wheels van is the Edmonton Mennonite Centre for Newcomers. The GM Community Wheels van is essential for this organization. It helps the staff and newcomers to Canada participate in many of the programs and activities listed below:
Child, Family and Youth Programs
Transportation provided by the GM Community Wheels van makes a significant difference in the lives of mothers and young children new to Canada . When transportation is provided, it makes the difference between isolation and community participation. The GM Community Wheels van helps families new to Canada connect with a local church or go to a library. Public transportation is challenging on a Sunday, so new families greatly appreciate a ride in the van.
Francophone Immigrant Youth Program A group of 20 enthusiastic youth come together on Thursday afternoons for recreational and tutorial activities. In the summer the youth enjoy a 3-week camp with field trips to the library, the legislature, swimming pools and parks. The GM Community Wheels van transports the youth to the weekly program and make the summer field trips possible.
